Music and gaming!

Unread post by Bob_12 »

Music is a big part of the games I run and my players have songs that are linked to strong emotions from the games. I always kind of plan out a general style of music to play for a certain game.

What do you all like to listen to when you play and what do you play when you run a game?

I was running Palladium Fantasy and the PC's were assaulting a tower belonging to a demon lord filled with strange machinery. The demon lord and his minions liked to torture their victims. I named the demon lord, King Diamond, and appropriately, BLASTED King Diamond while we were playing. I purposely turned it up to make it loud enough to be distracting and for the players to have to yell to hear each other. The whole point was to be distracting and make them uncomfortable. It was a success.

My mystic knight had slayers war ensemble built into his helmet as TW theme music. I think metal fits rifts well, and certainly black metal for the FOM, which I always imagine as being very black metal-esque. The Emperor song "I am the black wizards" could be the FOM theme song-

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YgQRRI9goFg
Mightiest am I,
but I am not alone in this cosmos of mine.
For the black hills consists of black souls,
souls that already dies one thousand deaths.
Behind the stone walls (of centuries) they breed their black art.
Boiling their spells in cauldrons of black gold.

Far up in the mountains,
where the rain fall not far,
yet the Sun cannot reach.
The wizards, my servants,

summon the souls of macrocosm.
No age will escape my wrath.
I travel through time and I return to the future.
I gather wisdom now lost.
I visit again the eternally ancient caves,
before a mighty Emperor thereupon came.
Watching the mortals "discovering" my chronicles, guarded
by the old demons, even unknown to me.

Once destroyed their souls are being summoned
to my timeless prison of hate.
It is delightful to feast upon the screaming souls
that were destroyed in my future.

How many wizards that serve me with evil, I know not.
My empires has no limits.

From the never ending mountains black, to the bottomless lakes.
I am the ruler and has been for eternities long.
I am them.

(I am them.)
(I am them.)

From the never ending mountains black, to the bottomless lakes.
I am the ruler and has been for eternities long.
My wizards are many, but their essence is mine.
Forever they are in the hills in their stone homes of grief.
Because I am the spirit of their existence.
I am them.

I am them.
I am them.

Also a fair amount of martial industrial, dark ambient and digital hardcore.

I run PFRPG and use the Conan the Barbarian soundtrack to motivate me personally. We do not use music during sessions.

A few of the TouHou remixes go well with certain themes, 'Mass Effect' 1 & 2 soundtracks for epicness-in-space, 'Two steps from hell' for generic epic, and the 'Silent Hill' 1 & 2 soundtracks for creepy creep "OMG we're not in Kansas no more." feelings. ;)

OCremix.org has some great arrangemnets from various vid-games through the ages which go very well for different themes (in fact, they have many 'theme' albums there for download), and well... yeah.
I don't do metal... never developed a taste for that sorta thing and find it to be jarring and distracting :thwak:  but hey... different strokes, and all that.

But yes, music is a VERY critical part of the gaming experince. It makes the GM & Players feel like they're doing an audio-book or in their own movie.
Bind the body to the opened mind
Bind the body to the opened mind

I dream of towers in a world consumed
A void in the sentient sky
I dream of fissures across the moon
Leaves of the lotus rise

Music and sound effects are an important aspect of my gaming experience. For example, while the group is busy talking in character amongst themselves, I'll slowly turn down the music. Then scream "Surprise" in an unexpected players ear.

I find it works. :clown:
