My suggestion is just use human life span and birthrate in comparison. Human life span average is 60 years, elves live 600 which is 10 times the human life span. I usually allow "inspired" characters but direct ripoffs are looked at like the crap they are.
My current group knows that I reward creativity and ignore carbon copies so its not an issue to me as much anymore.
