No, you didn't drop the ball. It's always the perogative of a GM to deviate from canon. You've got some clearly stated reasons why you want to change things. It doesn't matter what you do in your game, as long as you stay internally consistant.

I think its a crappy vehicle. Its slow, big, not very well armored for its size and barely able to defend itself. On top of that you could buy a fleet of hover vehicles that would to the explorer's job better for a fraction of the price. Aww is it too much RP and not enough hack and slash for you? ...

As written, the player characters in the CERPG are basically all superhumans with high technology and good resources.
